Semiramis Appiamo asked:

Philippe Jaroussky is perhaps the most prominent French counter tenor of the century. He has a voice of great power and beauty - “the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the Devil,” one French critic wrote.

But a counter tenor? It’s important to note that this is a conscious choice for the male singer. He could sing baritone or bass, but chooses to, as voice teacher David Jones phrases it, sing what is a female sound in a male body.

What does it take to enter this field? One must be both courageous and gifted, adventuresome, forward-thinking and extremely agile. The music demands consummate artistry and high hurdles for the voice. Jaroussky “seems to have endless breath, singing long extended lines with total ease,” writes one reviewer.

An Aquarius with Gemini rising, Philippe Jaroussky seems to have what it takes.

According to voice teacher, David Jones, the counter tenor is a voice type often misunderstood, sometimes thought as a ‘freak of nature.’ As to why someone would choose to do this, Jones postulates: “Perhaps this gets attention. It is certainly the aspect of the counter tenor that fascinates audiences.” Jones feels there is a definite personality type connected.

Counter tenors must develop the falsetto voice with such strength that it has power and resonance similar to a full-voiced sound. The lower the original voice, the stronger and more beautiful the falsetto. To do this, they must “hold back tremendous amounts of breath pressure with the body” and have tremendous agility.

Take a look at Jaroussky singing a Vivaldi aria as he wins 2007 Best French lyrical award. This happened at his Saturn Return - of course. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zQX2XqAE8c .

Now lets look at Jaroussky’s chart. He was born February 13, 1978 in Maisons Lafitte, France. He studied violin first, receiving a diploma in violin performance from the Paris Conservatory, department of Ancient Music. In 1996, he began vocal studies and made the decision to be a counter tenor.

Sun in Aquarius gives him the ability to span centuries and always want what’s new and different. Most of the works for counter tenors are Monteverdi (this is going waaay back), Vivaldi, Handel … Baroque. They are so old they are new. Being bored with the status quo is what Aquarius is all about. Making this decision is the sort of offbeat things Aquarians do. With that extremely objective mind and good powers of observation, he could study the field and find a niche, just quirky enough, that would really make his career go. After all, he could be just another of the hundreds, even thousands, of baritones out there.

The incredible agility is typical of Gemini rising. They are extremely active by nature. Take a look at his face and vocal movements and then listen to how fast he talks when he receives the award. It’s quick as Mercury. Gemini rising needs to be involved in many things, and all the travel this sort of career requires should be especially enjoyable to him. He went from violin, to voice, and then formed his own instrumental ensemble, Artaserse. That was something NEW he could do.

With Mercury in 14 degrees Aquarius, we seal the deal. An original thinker who enjoys shocking others. Well what were we saying. There is always fascination when we hear/watch a counter tenor. This Mercury demands mental and intellectual stimulation, and this is something to learn that requires that sort of work.

The discipline and breathwork it takes, is in the Taurus moon. Along with this incredible agility there is the steadiness and calmness. The Moon is how the person feels. While he is cavorting all over the musical scale, he’s very centered. If you watch the video you will notice that he is not the slightest bit nervous. This is a mercurial energy, not nervous energy, and it plays against a solid backbeat. We get the sense this performance - extremely rigorous - does not exhaust him, as it might someone with another sign and rising sign.

Enjoying being offbeat it also in his Mercury at 14 Degrees Aquarius and his Venus at 29 degrees. He even attracts friends who are exciting, different, and sometimes even odd.

With his chart, he would become angry easily if he felt he were slighted (wonder what would’ve happened had he not gotten the award), and it’s best he show it and deal with it immediately. His fluid emotional expressions would reveal that he probably does this, in a very fluid manner, which is the best style for him. He is obviously thrilled to receive the award, and would never think of hiding it.

Yes, with Jupiter in 26 degrees Gemini, he just loves a big problem to work on, and has the ability to grasp abstractions and a powerful intellect. As any voice teacher will tell you, you have to set aside ego and go after something like counter tenor, and almost from an intellectual standpoint, as it is not something that ever comes “naturally” to someone.

Philippe Jaroussky, a man to watch. And to listen to. Absolutely beautiful.

Timothy Spencer asked:

Roses may speak more eloquently when words fail to say exactly what you want to say and as beautiful as you want to say it. Sometimes, there are situations when it may be awkward to talk to a person about certain things. This is when we turn to roses to do the saying for us. Their simple beauty can easily express a deep feeling for a person without stuttering and the risk of sounding fake.

Sympathy and admiration are two emotions that are hard to verbalize exactly. Why? Well, it’s because sympathy is very similar to pity, and in some cases it is almost impossible to tell them apart. The difference lies in the fact that while sympathy for a person is very welcome since it shows just how much you care, pity is not. Pity may mean that you find the person hopeless and pathetic. In expressing sympathy, one must be very careful not to appear as if one is pitying the person since doing otherwise may hurt a person’s pride and feelings and you don’t want to do that.

Admiration, on the other hand, can easily be mistaken for love. Admiring someone means that you respect, esteem, and look up to him or her. The person’s achievements may be things you want to achieve as well, thus you feel admiration for a person. Love is different because it involves a deeper feeling; it is passion for a person you want to spend your life with. Often, when we love someone, we admire him or her as well for qualities, which we value. However admiring a person doesn’t automatically mean that we love the person. Giving the wrong signal may hurt the person or result in awkward situations.

Sympathy or pity, admiration or love—it is indeed difficult to tell the difference, more so to express them. If you don’t trust your words, giving a rose may help you say what you want to say. The rose color that conveys admiration and/or sympathy is light pink. Make sure to get the best light pink rose to convey your feelings and it can be found in the Philippines through Island Rose.

Island Rose Philippines has the perfect light or baby pink rose which they call Vivaldi. Vivaldi is a hybrid tea, which is one of the most popular type of roses in the world. The blooms are of the large variety while the stems are straight and measures around 55-70 cm. The vase life is very good, which means that it doesn’t wilt as easily as other commercial roses. If you want to order, they offer delivery in the Philippines. Delivery is fast and efficient, so buying Vilvaldi isn’t a headache. Their quick delivery ensures that you get fresh Vivaldi roses straight from the farm.

If you’re looking for the perfect light pink rose to express your admiration and/or sympathy for a person, try Vivaldi. You definitely won’t get your words mixed up!

James Brown asked:

Does Mozart make babies smarter? I compiled some facts about the effect classical music has on children and what else it could do for teens and adults. But the main question is if it scientifically improves the mental skills of a child.

Science says that it has not been proven. But Mozart still has positive influences on all ages. Bonnie Ward Simon, a music educator, says that improving the senses of a child is very important. She thinks it’s best to develop the skills of a child at an early age. TV and Internet videos don’t have positive effects like music does. Bonnie also says, and I quote, ‘The visual sense does take over very quickly. There’s too much look and not listen today.’ Her theory is that children cannot imagine as well and make up pictures because it’s all been reprogrammed. She says that children should be listening more to music than watching TV and I agree.

Dr. Victor Strasburg, a clinical pediatrician, says that TV is potentially harmful, but they don’t know about music.

The Mozart effect - The actual theory has been studied by many universities and also by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatisin (who studied it for 30 years!). The Mozart effect has been studied many times over but there has never been proof of results. Although at one university they had students listen to Mozart and nothing before tests and there were more results when they listened to Mozart. It seemed to have helped them focus on their tests and score better. Maybe I will listen to classical music before some of my tests!

Mozart for adults is also a good idea. It probably won’t make you any smarter and you definitely will not score higher on tests because you are out of school but it does help with nerves. Listening to Mozart or classical music in general is good if you want to relax or calm down. A couple of other good genres are jazz, nature sounds, or romantic songs. If you know other genres of music that are more relaxing then listen to those! I don’t think adults relax enough. With a stressful job and family to care for you never get time for yourself. I think that everyone should take some time out of his or her day to have fun or relax. Do what ever you like best and enjoy it. Music is probably one of the best ways to let out your feelings and express yourself.

Back to babies, even though music may not make your child smarter it will still help them with their growth development. It will help with their hearing senses and if it is an educational song they will memorize the words and learn lessons. So go to the stores and buy a bunch of fun, wacky songs for you and your child to sing along to. Believe me if will go a long way. To answer the question fully, the Mozart effect doesn’t work. But it has good effects for adults, tens, and children.

Trevor Mayes asked:

Sound is the oldest form of healing and of that, it is the sound of the mother’s voice that is the most important. Sony conducted research in the 80’s that showed sounds played to babies while in the womb influenced their behaviour. It has been proven that like animals human babies can detect their mother’s voice from other females and there is evidence that they can do this in the womb too. Other research has shown that babies can remember and recognise sounds from the womb a year after birth.

The Colour of Music

Each colour has a corresponding musical keynote that in turn resonates with the respective chakra and as follows.

Colour / Keynote / Chakra

Red = C = Base.

Orange = D = Sacral.

Yellow = E = Solar-Plexus.

Green = F = Hear .

Blue = G = Throat.

Indigo = A = Brow.

Violet = B = Crown.

Resonance

Forced resonance or vibration is simply caused by one vibrating object forcing another in close proximity to vibrate though sheer power even though it may have a different natural frequency. This can have a detrimental effect upon us things like loud poor quality music which makes me cringe is guaranteed to make me feel aggressive and flee the area or demand it be turned down. Similar oppressive vibrations from people forcing issues can have the same effect with the same result. That is why noise pollution can lead to physical violence.

Sympathetic resonance is the projection of sound vibrations that cause another object to vibrate as it has the same frequency, singers breaking glasses in one example, as is metal vibrating to heavy bass sounds. We can experience a sympathetic resonance in our bodies in areas that have a similar vibrational frequency. Playing music of the corresponding colour can have the same effect as the colour itself as it resonates with the respective chakra frequency.

For example, I was playing Michael Bolton’s Drift Away holding the record sleeve and noticed it vibrated soon after the he started singing. I found the same thing happened with glossy paper so I analysed the keynote that was F#3 as there are I believe 6 sharps and 3 is obviously the middle one. I analysed Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Emily Wherever I May Find Her’ and the same thing happened the glossy paper vibrated, I analysed it and it was F#4 almost identical. On both occasions, I could feel the music as being relaxing and a slight feeling in the chest as green relates to the heart chakra, I was not sure if holding the paper increased the feeling I had. The paper obviously vibrated more strongly the closer I held it to the speaker and may be a sort of litmus test for the keynote of F#.F# covers much of Simon and Garfunkel which I enjoy but I cannot say is my favourite it very much depends on my mood. I sometimes like rock most of which is C or C#, which gives me a lift. To help me settle down to study I have found strings helpful especially air on a G string in the keynote of D which is orange and a feel good colour Sometimes the clue to any ailment can come from the opposite star sign that have very similar keynotes. Therefore, as a Gemini I am F #, a Sagittarius is natural F, and the forces of these two opposites can sometimes mingle in the body.

Your Natural Sound Frequency

We all have a natural sound frequency; the simplest way of finding it is by looking at the keynote of your star sign.

Star Sign / Keynote

Aries = D-flat major.

Taurus = E-flat major.

Gemini = F-sharp major.

Cancer = G-sharp major.

Leo = A-sharp major.

Virgo = C-major.

Libra = D-major.

Scorpio = E-major.

Sagittarius = F-major.

Capricorn = G-major.

Aquarius = A-major.

Pisces = B-major.

When under pressure our physical body pull on the subtle bodies leaving them weakened and vulnerable to attack. We no longer have the energy to tolerate normal pressures or disturbances to our system, so be become more aware and less tolerant of the things that we find stressful or hurtful. Noise also causes interference and distortion with our ability to communicate effectively, hence mixed messages and misunderstandings arise that can cause conflict.

While this is not ‘music therapy’ per see studies published in medical and musical journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Lancet and the Journal of Music Therapy are finding that music can; reduce blood pressure, improve immune function, and decrease the length of hospital stays for both children and adults.

Rhythm.

Rhythm is what gets or primal energies and instincts going, it stimulates the heart and flow of blood that may account for the expression rhythm of life. Ancient peoples have not only used the drum and dance to wind themselves up before battle but also as a form of healing to stimulate the base chakra which is coloured red.

Using rhythm for healing can be a group activity as there are what is know as drum circles which is simply a group of people making rhythmic music. Drum circles are becoming a popular form of complimentary healing in America and scientific research has proven that participating in drum circles increases the number of “killer cells” in the body. These cells are those responsible for seeking out and destroying specific disease organisms including AIDS.

The Healing Value Of Melody

Melodies can soothe emotional and mental distress for when the normal vibrational activity of certain body parts is disrupted disharmony or disease sets in. Research suggests music seems to override the disharmony in the brain that causes depression and other forms of emotional disorders and puts it back to where it should be. It helps discharge negative feelings, facilitates communication and increases socialisation with other people. This results in greater personal expression with resulting boost in self-esteem

The medical benefits include use for the pain relief of cancer patients and behaviour problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease, a reduction in blood pressure, improved immune system functioning and faster healing resulting in a shorter stay in hospital. Melody is helpful for doing repetitive bodily functions where timing is important.

Musical Notes That Are Good For Emotional Healing.

Whereas C# is the keynote of the earths orbit around the sun, F# is the keynote of the spin of the earth and relates to what makes us humans the dominant species; the power of the mind and the attainment of intelligence, however with this ability comes problems from emotional disturbance to mental illness. The keynote F# relates to the air signs Gemini and Sagittarius that are F# and F respectively and sometimes these opposites are intermingled.

With analysing keynotes, this can change from F to F# according to how the music is analysed so for this purpose I suggest that there can be some allowable variation in keynotes to have the same effect. Therefore, a keynote on this scale should be aimed for as being best for any sort of emotional imbalance and healing.

The other thing I have noticed while playing around with traditional Japanese music for a website, is that stereo enhancement and adding a slight echo to string music has a very pleasant emotional effect. Perhaps it is because it causes addition sympathetic resonance of the keynote but it does work better for me than the original music, although on poor quality speakers it can sound a bit tinny. Tempo is another consideration and something not to fast otherwise we miss the detail in the music and that brings me to make the point as a bit of an audiophile that good audio reproduction is an essential part of the healing process.

Instruments for the reproduction of F keynotes are stringed instruments such as guitars, violins, harps, piano, and the organ. The types of music are the folk rock of Simon and Garfunkel’s, rhythmic folk music, Irish folk songs, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Strauss’s waltzes, Brahms Hungarian Dances or any stringed classical music in the key of F to F#.

L Law asked:

The Romantic Era was the music of Western civilization in the 19th century. Some of the most notable composers of the Romantic Era were Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, and Wagner. Beethoven is the most difficult to place because much of his earlier compositions were in the classical style, while his later compositions were romantic. The ultimate goal of Romantic music was to attain freedom of design to express powerful human emotions through music.

Romantic music had its foundations in classical music, or music written in the classical style. Romantic composers did not seek to stray from classical form, but to manipulate the rules in order to create more expressive and passionate music. The structure of the classical form was very strict and limiting with what the composer could do musically. The romantics appreciated the form, but broke the limitations, adding or expanding sections of music that would not normally be allowed. Beethoven, for example, was the leader of separating from the classical form and tradition. In his controversial Symphony No. 9, Beethoven introduced vocalists, and a chorus into his final movement. In the classical form, this would not have been allowed. If a piece began as an instrumental piece, it was to remain and end as an instrumental piece.

The Romantic era did not only try the limits of classical form, but it also changed the form of the orchestra. As the musical range of work increased, the size of the orchestra increased with the addition of new instruments and larger sections. The tuba was added to the brass section. New valves for brass instruments were introduced and utilized to give the instruments a more flexible sound. The string section was enlarged to accentuate the sound and dramatic richness of the strings. Bongos and other less conventional percussion instruments were added to the orchestra as well.

Another aspect of Romantic music that separated it from its predecessor was its integration of literature and art into the pieces. This was called Program Music, or music that tells a story. There are three types of program music; the program symphony, the concert overture and the symphonic poem.

The program symphony is characterized by a recurring theme, as in Berlioz’s Symphonic Fantastique where a young man dreams about a woman who comes in the form of a melody which recurs in his mind indefinitely. The concert overture is a one movement piece intended for a performance at a concert. An example would be Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, or Romeo and Juliet. The final type is the symphonic poem. The symphonic poem was invented by the romantic composer Franz Liszt. It is a one movement piece for orchestra, but the main theme is transformed (thematic transformation) in mood and character. The piece which introduced this type of program music was called Hamlet.

Two very popular forms of music during the Romantic Era were suites and waltzes. Suites were related pieces gathered together for a performance of a play, such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. The waltz was the most popular dance in the nineteen century, so the composers responded to demand and produced many.

The chief characteristics of the Romantic Era are the dramatic contrasts of dynamics and pitch, large orchestra (due mostly to brass), the freedom of powerful emotional expression, new shape and form from recurring and transforming themes and nationalism.

Voted in 2006 by a group of ten European media outlets as number three on a list of “top ten European Orchestras,” after the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concert , the Berlin Philharmonic (in German: Die Berliner Philharmoniker”) has held a prominent place in the German capital’s musical and cultural life. The Berlin Philharmonic’s primary concert venue is the Philharmonie, located in the Kulturforum area of the city. Simon Rattle has been the Berlin Philharmonic’s principal conductor since 2002. Subsidized by the city of Berlin in partnership with the Deutsche Bank, the Berlin Philharmonic also supports several chamber music ensembles.

Founded by 54 musicians in the spring of 1882 under the name “Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle” (literal translation: “Former Bilse’s Band”) in 1882, the players formed a breakaway group after conductor Benjamin Bilse announced plans to take the band on a fourth class train to Warsaw for a concert. Under the financial management of Hermann Wolff in 1887, the orchestra was reorganized and given its current name. Ludwig Brenner became the Berlin Philharmonic’s first conductor; in 1887 Hans von Bülow, one of the most respected conductors in the world, joined, thereby establishing the orchestra’s reputation. The Berliners subsequently engaged a string of other esteemed composers/conductors such as Hans Richter, Felix von Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms, and Edvard Grieg.

In 1985, Arthur Nikisch became chief conductor, then was succeeded by Wilhelm

Fürtwängler. After Fürtwängler fled to Switzerland in 1945, Leo Borchard became chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic; however, this arrangement lasted only a few months when Borchard was accidentally shot and killed by American forces occupying Berlin. Sergiu Celibidache then took up the baton as chief conductor from 1945 to 1952.

Fürtwängler returned in the same year and conducted the orchestra until his death in 1954.

With the ascendance to the conductor’s podium of the glamorous, dynamic and controversial (due to allegations surrounding his possible membership in the Nazi party) Herbert von Karajan in 1955, the Berlin Philharmonic entered a period of tremendous activity, marked by a vast number of recordings and world tours. Herbert von Karajan resigned in April 1989, only months before his death.

After von Karajan, Claudio Abbado became principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, expanding the orchestra’s repertoire beyond the classical and romantic warhorses and moving it into the works of the modern 20th century. Abbado stepped down in 2002.

During the post-unification period, the Berlin Philharmonic had to contend with financial problems resulting from budgetary stress in the city of Berlin.

Simon Rattle was elected as chief conductor in 1999 by the Berlin Philharmonic’s musicians. Rattle made it a condition of his contract that the Berlin Philharmonic become a self-governing public foundation, with the power to make its own artistic and

financial decisions. This in turn involved a change in the state law, approved in 2001, thereby allowing Mr. Rattle to join the organization in 2002. Initially, Mr. Rattle’s contract with the orchestra was through 2012; however, in 2008 the Berlin Philharmonic voted in favor of retaining him as their chief conductor.

There are many museums to visit when you go to Vienna for some fun and adventure. The clock Museum has some of the world’s best exhibits for clocks. This specialty museum takes about a half a day to go through. The Museum of applied arts has many pieces of artwork and a huge collection of art from Gustav Klimt. The House of music is a specialty museum, where you could learn about the music and the legends of music. There are many exhibits in this Museum that tell you about the history of Vienna’s music.

While you visit Vienna you want to stop at the Central Cemetery. This is where you will find some of the headstones for Strauss, Brahms and Beethoven. They also have a children’s museum. Donauturm is an observation tower where you can look out over Vienna and see all the beautiful sights. The natural history Museum has many exhibits of dinosaur skeletons, insect displays from around the world and meteorites exhibits. If you are the mood for a long walk, Ringstrasse is a place to walk at night and during the day. It is amazing how different it is at night from the daytime hours.

Next, you can explore the Academy of Fine Arts where you will see artworks from Rubens and Bosch’s, “The Last Judgment.” If you are looking for a drink and a nice relaxing place, you might want to stop its Sky Bar. This bar has a quiet atmosphere and very friendly people. If you have plenty of the energy, you could take the Danube Bike Path. This bike trail runs along the Danube River and has many beautiful sights. With all these things to do, you are going to need somewhere to relax at night.

You might find some of the nightlife in Vienna, very exciting. They have many nightclubs with dancing, singing, live music and some fabulous cocktails. Two places that come to mind for a fun time at night is the American Loos Bar and the Casino Wien. Of course, many people like to go to Flex Bar, which has a friendly atmosphere and you can play a game of billiards. After a fun night out, you might want to take an easy way to see the scenery around Vienna the next day. The Heurigen Express is a railroad tour that takes you around the area so you can see all the beautiful scenery.

There are many places to visit during your holiday in Vienna, but the one thing you really need to consider doing is taking a walk through the many different neighborhoods. Some of the neighborhoods are only for walking during day, but there are a few that are beautiful at night with all the lights and people walking back and forth. You could plan to spend a week or two weeks in Vienna and still never see everything there is to see. Your itinerary should start with the museums and some good restaurants and just go from there.
